The BCB typically structures its central contracts based on format-specific performance and involvement. Last year, 21 cricketers were part of the central contract, and a similar number is expected this year. However, the BCB may adjust players' responsibilities across different formats depending on recent performances and future plans.

Shakib’s absence from the central contract appears linked to political developments in the country. The veteran all-rounder had earlier expressed his desire to retire from Test cricket on home soil during the South Africa series. However, due to intense political unrest and legal troubles, he was unable to return to Bangladesh.

Since then, Shakib has been absent from multiple international series. He missed the series against Afghanistan and was notably absent from Bangladesh's tour of the West Indies, where the team played across all three formats.

Shakib was also scheduled to play for Chittagong Kings in the ongoing Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) but ultimately did not participate. Adding to his woes, he has been embroiled in several legal cases amid the country's volatile political situation.

Recently, Shakib traveled to England to play county cricket for Surrey. However, his stint was marred by controversy as umpires raised concerns over his bowling action. Despite undergoing two assessments, Shakib failed to clear the tests, leading to his exclusion from the Champions Trophy squad, where he was only considered as a batter.

Meanwhile, promising young pacer Nahid Rana is set to receive his first-ever central contract.
