Former Sri Lanka women’s national team head coach, Jeevantha Kulatunga, has been suspended by Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) following the revelation of Al Jazeera's investigation into match-fixing. The board has also suspended provincial coach—Tharindu Mendis, and Galle stadium assistant manager and curator—Tharanga Indika.

“Sri Lanka Cricket decided to suspend with immediate effect the alleged individuals involved in the said incident against whom the ICC is carrying out investigations,” SLC wrote in a statement on Sunday (May 27).

Kulatunga was part of a scene in the documentary where an Al Jazeera reporter, posed as a businessman, was speaking to people that are allegedly capable of fixing actual games. On the other hand, Mendis and Indika were seen in the investigation into pitch fixing.

“Playing cricket for us is like brushing our teeth in the morning,” Kulatunga said in the documentary. “But playing according to your plan is the easiest thing because there's no pressure for us.”

Among the three suspended officials, Kulatunga has represented Sri Lanka in two T20Is in 2008 and the other two has also played in the domestic circuits of the country. They were seen discussing and making promises in the company of Indian match-fixer Robin Morris and Dubai-based Indian businessman Gaurav Rajkumar, in different parts of the documentary.

“The names we learned about as a result of this documentary - we suspended them immediately,” SLC vice-president Mohan de Silva reportedly said. “It's our duty to protect the game, and we want to reiterate that we have a zero-tolerance approach towards corruption. We will look at our processes and improve them to ensure there is no leeway.”
