ZC (Zimbabwe Cricket) has appointed former Afghanistan coach Lalchand Rajput as Zi9mbabwe's interim head coach, on Thursday. He will be replacing them team’s ousted former head coach Heath Streak.

Lalchand is a former India batsman who played for the team between 1985 and 1987. He was also India’s team manager when the team won the first-ever ICC World T20 in 2007. He also took charge of IPL side Mumbai Indians in 2008.

The 56-year-old helped Afghanistan gain Full Member status after taking over the head coach role back in 2016. He was replaced by Phil Simmons earlier this year.

A tweet by the ZC read: “ZC has named Lalchand Rajput as Zimbabwe's interim head coach. The 56-year-old former India cricketer is a highly qualified, vastly experienced and well-respected coach who was in charge when India won the inaugural ICC World Twenty20 in 2007. We wish you all the best!”

Streak was sacked by the ZC following Zimbabwe’s failure to qualify for the 2019 ICC World Cup. Lalchand is expected to start his work ahead of the tri-nation series involving Zimbabwe, Pakistan, and Australia.

ZC is going through a bad phase due to mismanagement and the Zimbabwe cricketers have recently threatened its governing body saying they will boycott the upcoming series over unpaid salaries and match fees.
