Mumbai keep season alive by thwarting KXIP

King XI Punjab have extended their losing streak to four matches after suffering a defeat against Mumbai Indians. MI have kept their season hopes alive with this win and both the teams will go into their last and final league matches in a must-win situation.

Winning the toss, KXIP invited the opponents to bat first. Andrew Tye didn’t let the MI top-order settle down on the crease as soon as he started his first spell. He allowed only 5 runs in those 2 overs and bagged three wickets, including a brace that saw Ishan Kishan and Evin Lewis return to the pavilion as MI faced a collapse.

Rohit Sharma too, had to leave the crease before he could make any impact as he went at Ankit Rajpoot and hoisted a catch to mid-on. Kieron Pollard, after a string of disappointing performances, finally came out of shell and stood firm against the KXIP bowling attack alongside Krunal Pandya.

Pollard smashed his first-ever fifty in this season, while Krunal made 32. The former was dismissed by Ravichandran Ashwin and the latter was removed by Marcus Stoinis. Ashwin and Tye later scalped one more wicket each, but couldn’t stop MI from posting a daunting total of 186 runs.

In reply, KXIP’s lone-warrior Lokesh Rahul tried his best to keep the team alive in the contest, but following his departure in the penultimate over after a heroic innings of 94 runs, the hapless team eventually fell short of 3 runs.

After Chris Gayle’s exit following his 18-run knock, Rahul formed a 111-run partnership along with Aaron Finch, who clubbed 46 runs. Mitchell McClenaghan took two wickets, including that of Gayle.

Bumrah was the pick of MI's bowlers as he helped his side mount a comeback by breaking the most crucial partnership between Rahul and Finch. Both Rahul and Stoinis got dismissed by Bumrah in his final spell during the death overs. He was awarded the Man of the Match for his late heroics that brought MI back into the match.

Mumbai have finally managed to enter the elite club despite a miserable start to their campaign. With six wins from 13 matches, they are just below third-placed Kolkata Knight Riders, who have registered one more win than the Rohit-led men. On the other hand, KXIP have replaced MI in the sixth spot with the same number of points as MI.

Mumbai Indians will take on another eliminated team, Delhi Daredevils, in their last match on May 20. King XI Punjab will face Chennai Super Kings on the same day.
