Mashrafe returns to red-ball cricket

Mashrafe Bin Mortaza has expressed his desire to return to Tests over the last few months. The pacer is now set to make a return to Bangladesh Cricket League (BCL) after four long years. He will be playing for South Zone in the sixth and final round where the team will take on North Zone.

With Bangladesh due to tour West Indies in July, the Narail Express was asked if he is thinking of resuming his career in the longest format in West Indies, where his Test-career halted back in 2009. The Bangladesh ODI skipper confirmed that he will play should the opportunity arrive.

He said, “Since I haven’t retired from Tests, I'll play if the opportunity comes. But nobody knows when it will happen. I have to get a chance in Test cricket with my performance.

“I played two matches in the last season’s National Cricket League (NCL) and will play one game in BCL. Basically I want to keep myself fit taking part in longer version.”

“I always miss this format. There are a lot to learn for cricketers. It’s not possible to play long time in other formats of cricket without playing in Test cricket. I’ll play one game and will try to give my best,” added Mashrafe.

Although his Test return remains in doubt, the 34-year-old was asked to return to T20Is just a year after his retirement from the format. However, he was reluctant to resume his career in the shortest format despite several requests from the authorities.

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president Nazmul Hasan Papon and chief selector Minjhajul Abedin had earlier confirmed Mashrafe’s wish to return to Test cricket.

“I have asked him to return in the two-match T20I series against Sri Lanka but nothing forcefully, while he said that he wants to play Test cricket but not T20. So the matter did not roll further,” said Papon, before Bangladesh’s T20I-series against Sri Lanka.

“The matter is wholly up to him and BCB. We will do as instructed. If Mashrafe wants to play Tests then he will. But we want him return to the T20 fold. He is much more required there,” Minhajul stated recently.
