Fizz & Mumbai: So close to victory yet so far away

Mumbai Indians saw another defeat, this time against Delhi Daredevils, in the battle of the bottom two in IPL. Both Mumbai and Delhi went into the match after having tasted two back-to-back defeats in their previous matches.

Winning the toss, Delhi Daredevils opted to bowl first. Little did they know what was coming next as the hapless side encountered the wrath of the MI openers. They stitched an opening partnership of 102 runs in just 9 overs.

Surykumar Yadav clubbed a blistering 53-run innings before Rahul Tewatia successively picked up the wickets of Evin Lewis and him. Lewis made 48 runs before getting trapped lbw.

Then another 57-run stand between Ishan Kishan and MI skipper—Rohit Sharma was indicating a 200+ score for the home team. However, DD finally tied up the loose ends and allowed only 28 runs in the last 27 deliveries. Following Kishan’s departure on his score of 44, four more wickets were scalped by the DD bowlers including that of Sharma who made 18 runs.

MI ended up scoring 194/7 in 20 overs. Daniel Christian and Trent Boult bagged 2 wickets for DD while Mohammad Shami also joined the hunt to take a scalp.

The target set by MI was yet more than enough, given the set of bowlers they have. However, an ardent Jason Roy turned the tables to get the better of the opponents’ bowlers. A sublime 53-ball 91 runs’ innings from the England batsman singlehandedly defeated the hosting side with enough support from Rishabh Pant who played another splendid 47 off 25 deliveries’ innings.

Sherays Iyer also played an unbeaten innings of 27 runs as Roy steered the team to 7-wicket victory. The match also had some last minute drama as Mustafizur Rahman, who previously dismissed Gautam Gambhir on 15 runs, conceded 10 runs off the first two balls in the last over when 11 runs were required of it. He then bowled three dot balls, but couldn’t save his team by conceding a single from the last delivery.

Krunal Pandya also got two wickets but failed to rescue his team as the other bowlers leaked a plethora of runs each, except for Jasprit Bumrah and Fizz.

Mumbai will take on Royal Challengers Banglaore in their next match on April 17, a day after Gambhir's next match against his former team—Kolkata Knight Riders.

Score:

MI 194/7 (20.0 Overs)
