Broad reaches personal landmark despite England's poor display

England quick Stuart Broad has become the youngest player to reach 400 Test wickets after he took a scalp in New Zealand on Thursday. England, after winning the ODI series against the Kiwis, are now playing a 2-Test series against the hosts.
Had England not put up a miserable batting display, Broad wouldn’t have reached that milestone on day-1 of the first Test. Batting first, England were all out for only 58 runs. Craig Overton’s 33-run innings saved them from being all-out at the lowest score in their history after they became 27/9.
In reply, James Anderson bagged 2 wickets and Broad scalped one wicket as New Zealand finished the day being at 175/3.
Stuart Broad has reached the milestone at the age of 31 years and 271 days overcoming Dale Steyn’s previous record of reaching the figure at 32 years and 32 days of age.

It took the England pacer 114 matches to take that many scalps taking him past Kapil Dev who needed 115 matches to reach the landmark. Muttiah Muralitharan is the fastest to take 400 Test wickets as the leading wicket-taker in the format played just 72 matches to achieve the feat.
Broad is also the second-leading wicket-taker for his country after James Anderson who has 522 Test wickets to his name. Moreover, Anderson took 400 Test wickets in 104 matches.
This match was also marked for another rare feat achieved by Trent Boult and Tim Southee. They repeated what Waqar Younis and Wasim Akram had done against Sri Lanka back in 1994. On both occasions, the opening bowlers have been accounted for all ten wickets in their opening spells.
Wasim and Waqar took 4 and 6 wickets, respectively, when Pakistan restricted Sri Lanka to 71 runs in the 3rd Test of a three-Test series. Trent Boult also got 6 wickets under his belt today whereas Tim Southee sent four batsmen back to the hut.
While Pakistan went to win the match by an innings and 52 runs, the Black Caps have finished day-1 with a 117 run lead losing three of their wickets.
