Proteas pondering two spots ahead of Newlands Test

While Australia have named an unchanged side, the Proteas are still unsure of two spots ahead of the third Test starting at Newlands on Thursday. South Africa skipper Faf du Plessis has revealed that Chris Morris and Duanne Olivier have been released from the 17-man squad.

Morne Morkel and Lungi Ngidi are contesting for one of the undecided selections. Earlier, Morkel had announced that he would retire from international cricket after this series.

Morkel now has 297 Test wickets under his belt and another opportunity might help him reach 300 wickets. On the other hand, Lungi is struggling with a toe problem.

"Lungi bowled really well in the previous game, but he has got a bit of a toe problem. If he is not 100 percent then it is not a difficult decision," said Du Plessis.

"The first priority will be to try and get those balances if there are injuries or stuff that don't play a part.

"But there are also always exceptions and horses for courses. It is important for me to always have that in the back of my mind," he added.

Temba Bavuma and Theunis de Bruyn are in contention for another undecided spot. Bavuma has recovered from a finger injury and Theunis certainly did not exhibit an impressive performance in the first two Tests.

Du Plessis said, "We have a lot of confidence in Temba, he has not had a lot of cricket recently but the quality is there and it is a good ground for him."

In the Aussie camp, there were concerns regarding the fitness of Mitchell Starc and Mitchell Marsh. While Starc had been suffering a calf strain, Marsh sustained a groin injury. However, the Baggy Greens captain Steve Smith has confirmed that both the players are fit to play in the third Test after the 10-day break they’ve had.

"I think they’ll be okay. They both had a really good hit-out yesterday (Tuesday)," Smith said. "We’ve had 10 days in between Test matches so the break has been good for them. There are no concerns there."

"The first two Test matches were back-to-back so you can’t have a third one back-to-back. That just takes too much out the guys physically and mentally, particularly fast bowlers. It’s nice to have this break in the middle to refresh and get everything right,” he added.

South Africa: TBC

Australia: David Warner, Cameron Bancroft, Usman Khawaja, Steve Smith (captain), Shaun Marsh, Mitchell Marsh, Tim Paine, Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, Nathan Lyon
