New day, old Mahmudullah

Bangladesh have lost their fifth successive T20I following Mashrafe Bin Mortaza’s retirement from the format. With Shakib Al Hasan injured, the Tigers are really going through a tough time as they started the Nidahas Trophy with a defeat against India.

Batting first Bangladesh set a target of 140 runs for the opponents on Thursday. India overpowered the toothless Tigers and secured 2 points with their 4-wicket victory.

During the post-match ceremony, the acting Bangladesh skipper, Mahmudullah Riyad, stated the same reasons regarding the defeat which he had said after the 1st T20I against Sri Lanka in the last series when his team batted first, amassed over 190 runs and yet, lost the match.

According to him, they were again 30 runs short of what could’ve been a match-winning score for the team. He once again reflected the impact of dot balls in the batting innings. That simply means that, for some reasons, they are not learning from their mistakes.

Mahmudullah said, “We didn't bat well. We should have scored 30 more runs. We need to find out how to get runs on these kinds of wickets. Think the bowlers did a pretty good job.

“We need to rotate the strike more often. Dot balls create pressure on batsmen. Need to find gaps and get boundaries in the middle overs. One win will boost us and will reflect in our game. Hopefully, we'll get it.”

Rohit Sharma, on the other hand, was pleased how the players learned from the mistakes in the game against Sri Lanka and executed the plan this time. He was happy with the way his team performed.

“I think it was a great performance, something that was expected from us. Right from the start to the end, it was clinical and a complete team effort.

“We looked into what went wrong in the game against Sri Lanka and we thought hitting the length was the option for us. We wanted their batsmen to take on the longer boundaries. Bowlers executed plans very well. We kept it simple and got the basics right, which was missing in the first game.

“Catching is something where there's always room for improvement. We want to get better as a fielding side. We are much better than that,” said Rohit.
