'Virat Kohli should play county'

As if the Indian captain isn’t in elite mode already, former
India captain Kapil Dev as advised the run machine to try his luck in the
English circuit to become a better player. The mark of a true genius is the
ability to play anywhere in the world and while Kohli has shown that he can bat
in any conditions, Kapil Dev has suggested him to try his hand in county
cricket.
The legendary former India player, who won the 1983 World
Cup as the captain of India, believes that Kohli needs practice in English
conditions as his last tour in the country wasn’t one to remember.
“Practice makes a man perfect. One has to practice those
conditions,” Dev told British media. “The bar which we as cricketers set for
these people is that you have to be good in all conditions.
“That’s what we used to say about Allan Border or Vivian
Richards or Sunil Gavaskar - they were players to play any part, anywhere, any
kind of conditions, they used to perform.

“Virat Kohli, the question mark is in front of him, it’s
there. He has to get runs where it is considered to be the toughest conditions
in the world.”
The Indian skipper had a torrid time in England as James
Anderson was unplayable for him. Indeed, his average in that Test series was
only 13.4, which is miles below his usual average of 53.4 in 66 Tests.
Kapil Dev led the Indian team to a series win against
England in England in 1986 and also spent two seasons playing for Northamptonshire,
which is why he believes that a spell like that would help the Indian captain.
“What we’re seeing, with his temperament, I think he’s good
enough. It all depends if he gets a good start. He has the ability,” the former
all-rounder added.
“If he can play a season or two in English county cricket
there would be nothing wrong, because if you want to be the best player in the
world you have to get runs everywhere.”
