Australia opener should be selfish

Former Australia Test opener, Chris Rogers has heaped praise
on compatriot, Cameron Bancroft, while also suggesting that the Aussie should
be “selfish” in his approach to become an elite-level player.
Bancroft has seemingly fitted into the Australian team and
has done well in the two Ashes Tests that he has played thus far since being
called up to the national team. Batting at an average of 42 in two Tests, he
seems to have the skills necessary to make it to the top with the Baggie Green.
"He just needs to almost be a little bit selfish,"
Rogers told AAP.
Rogers also suggested that the youngster should look out for
himself as the limelight of playing for the national team could be a little too
radiant to grasp at times. From playing in front of a small crowd to having a
full house at WACA in the next Test, the step-up could be a bit daunting while
also having its advantages.
"It's a really hard one. I found it can actually be a
little bit of a distraction because there's so many people wanting to watch but
also hang out.

"You can end up getting caught trying to look after
everybody else when you need to kind of take care of yourself.
"But in saying that, there's familiarity and probably a
comfort level that comes with playing on your home track, where he's had
success this year."
Rogers, who mentored Bancroft during his County spell in
England last winter, believes that he is batting very well and that if he could
continue his form in the flatter deck of WACA, he will elongate his stay with
the team.
"The run-out in the second Test was really unfortunate.
That hurts because he looked really good," Rogers said.
"Then he got the new ball under lights. As he said,
they were swinging like bananas.
"But that's international cricket ... if he gets in and scores big runs on what could possibly be a pretty flat (WACA) wicket then he can book himself a spot in that side for a while to come."
