Mahmudullah Riyad: The last of Bangladesh’s ‘Big Five’ calls it a day

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) director Khaled Mahmud Sujon stated that a fixed batting position is important in the team but also backed the coach and captain’s decision.
Bangladesh cricket team experimented with their batting strength by shuffling the batting position in the ongoing World Cup. Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Najmul Hossain Shanto's batting positions were observed to be changed frequently in the last three matches of the tournament.

“In One Day Internationals, there are certain situations where it becomes necessary to make changes in the batting order. The decision to alter Miraz and Shanto’s batting position is based on the coach-captain's strategy of balancing the left-handed and right-handed combinations,” said Sujon.
Sujon also elaborated on why Mahmdullah Riyad is batting in the lower batting order. He believes that a team should have a specific batting position.
“Riyad is also batting down the order. Since we are playing with one extra batter. Shanto had scored a hundred in the Asia Cup while batting at four. It's not a big issue. It seems like this is because our top order is not playing well. If we had scored runs, the whole picture might have been different,” he said.
“I think precise batting position is important. We refer to certain players as "experts" in opening or batting at number three, for example. Miraz has succeeded in some areas. Shanto has never stated that he wouldn't play in positions three, four, or five, but the question was whether he has been batting at position three for the past year and a half in all formats. It might be his lay-out position. Ultimately, it is the captain-coach's decision. We have to accept it and move forward,” he added.
