Mahmudullah Riyad: The last of Bangladesh’s ‘Big Five’ calls it a day

Bangladesh head coach Chandika Hathurusingha said the Tigers would be highly focused on achieving the target, regardless of what happened in the past.

Bangladesh will face Afghanistan in their World Cup opener. They have faced each other 15 times, with Bangladesh leading 9-6.

The coach believes that his side has the ability to reach the semi-final and is capable of winning at least 4-5 matches in the tournament.

"We all want to win the World Cup but as you rightly asked me realistically is that if we win four to five games, we give ourselves a chance to get into the semi-final of the knockout stage -- that's our first aim,"

"We have the experience to beat every team. We have some exciting talents, there is experience. But the thing key is to play well on given day,"

The 55-year-old former Sri Lanka batsman added: "People can dream, people can aim, people can have goals. Whatever the word you use, it is the same thing.

"We're trying to have a good World Cup and win matches. That's the main aim for me...Our aim is to get into the semi-final, that can be a dream or can be an aim -- doesn't matter."

Bangladesh has not been able to win more than three matches in any ICC World Cup tournament so far. However, Bangladesh were able to secure a place in the quarterfinals, which remains their highest achievement in the cricket's showpiece event.

Chandika Hathurusingha was asked whether playing against Fazalhaq Farooqi in the World Cup would be a relief for Bangladesh in the absence of Tamim Iqbal. The head coach replied it was a strange question. Meanwhile, he praised Farooqi for doing well for Afghanistan over the years.

'Weird question. You asked about someone who is not here. I don't know how to answer this question. Farooqi is a good bowler. It doesn't matter who plays him. He has done well for Afghanistan over the years. Respect must be given to whoever plays him," he added.
