Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) chief selector Minhajul Abedin Nannu explained why veteran Tamim Iqbal was not included in the World Cup squad.

According to the chief selector, Tamim was left out of the World Cup squad due to concerns over his injuries. Despite making a strong comeback to ODI cricket with 44 runs in the second ODI against New Zealand the latter found no place in the squad.

Although he returned to play in the first two matches against New Zealand, he was rested for the final match due to the medical team's decision.

“There are some injuries you just can't risk. Team management will fall into trouble. You see, after playing the first and second match of the series we had to rest him in the last match,” said Nannu during the press conference after unveiling the squad.

Nannu explained that the decision to rest Tamim was taken after discussing with the medical and team management, and that there will be many matches to come in the long journey of the World Cup.

“Tamim is one of the best cricketers in our country. But it's hard to match yourself when you're worried about injury. Discussed with medical, discussed among ourselves. After that, the team was announced,” he said.

“We had concerns about Tamim’s injuries for a long time. After the New Zealand series...everything was taken into account, and everyone discussed and took the decision. The World Cup is a long journey and there will be many matches,” he added.

Tamim had complained that there was still some discomfort in his back after New Zealand's second match, which the team's physios were trying to help him overcome.

Meanwhile, captain Shakib al Hasan had informed the board and team management not to consider half-fit cricketers in the squad. There were rumors that Shakib stated to step down as captain as he did not want unfit players in the World Cup, which caused a lot of buzz among the netizens.
