Mahmudullah Riyad: The last of Bangladesh’s ‘Big Five’ calls it a day

New Zealand clinched the ODI series by registering a seven-wicket win against Bangladesh in the third ODI at Sher e Bangla National Cricket Stadium, Mirpur.
Chasing a mediocre target, the visitors made a decent start with a 49-run partnership from opener Finn Allen and Will Young.
Shoriful Islam struck twice to break the partnership as he returned Allen (28) and debutant Dean Foxcroft for a golden duck to give Bangladesh a boost.
Young then added another partnership with Henry Nicholls to amass 81 runs for the third wicket stand. Young registered 70 off 80 with ten boundaries and a solitary six before getting axed by Nasum Ahmed.
Nicholls guided the team with a half-century to chase down 172 runs, finishing unbeaten on 50 off 86 while Tom Blundell contributed 23*.

Earlier, Najmul Hossain Shanto played a brilliant knock that helped Bangladesh post 171 in 34.3 overs. Lone warrior Shanto smashed 76 off 84 deliveries aided by ten boundaries that helped the side to cross the 150-run mark.
He also surpassed the record of most runs on debut as an ODI captain as he crossed Aminul Islam Bulbul's 70-run knock against India in 1998.
Adam Milne was the pick of the bowling attack as he returned figure of 4 wickets conceding 34 runs in his 6.3 overs. While Trent Boult and Cole McConchie picked up two each.
Mahmudullah Riyad became the fourth Bangladesh batter to score 5,000-plus, however, he failed to play a big innings. The right-handed batter reached the milestone in the 16th over by taking a single off the bowling of fast bowler Lockie Ferguson.
The 37-year-old scored 21 off 27 before he was caught behind by wicket-keeper off to Milne.
Bangladesh were in trouble losing three wickets for 35 runs in six overs. Debutant Zakir Hasan (1) and young Tanzid Hasan Tamim (5) failed. Towhid Hridoy (18), who looked to counterattack, could only hold a stance briefly.
Mushfiqur was gone for 18 runs and Mahedi Hasan scored 13, following the dismissal of Shanto the Tigers kept losing wickets at regular intervals and eventually mustered a 172-run target.
