Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) named ace allrounder Shakib al Hasan the new ODI captain for the upcoming Asia Cup and ODI World Cup 2023.
BCB president Nazmul Hassan Papon announced it to the media on Friday. Shakib will now lead the Tigers in all three formats.
"We have appointed Shakib as the captain for Asia Cup and World Cup. The World Cup and Asia Cup squad will be announced tomorrow. The selectors will pick a squad of 17 members," Papon told reporters at his premises on Friday.
"If I give Shakib the captaincy for the Asia Cup, how can I give anyone else the captaincy for the World Cup?" Papon said when asked whether there was a plan to have different captains for the two major events.

BCB boss opined that there was no better option than Shakib for the captaincy role as the pressure will be high in the World Cup stage.

"Pressure is a big thing. World Cup pressure and pressure in bilateral series is different. So to handle that pressure in the World Cup, I think there is no-one better than Shakib," Papon retorted.
However, he admitted that it would be tough for Shakib to look after three format. "I think it will be tough for him to captain in three formats. I can't say about this without discussing with him," Papon said.
Former captain Tamim Iqbal decided to step down as ODI captain owing to a back injury. BCB was looking for a new captain since then, and an emergency meeting of directors was also held on August 8. However, the meeting ended without any fruitful result.
Apart from Shakib, the names of Litton Das and Mehidy Hasan Miraz were also mentioned as potential options. But in the end, the responsibility was handed over to Shakib. However, this is not the first time that Shakib will lead the ODI side.
Shakib has led Bangladesh in 50 ODI matches so far. He last captained in 2017 and served full term from 2009 to 2011, followed by acting duties.
