Ricky Ponting could join as Australian coach and take charge ahead of the upcoming Ashes and World Cup. He may join as the support staff of the current Aussie coach Justin Langer after the sudden quiet of the bowling coach David Saker.

The former Australian skipper previously assisted the former coach Darren Lehmann during a T20 tri-series against New Zealand and England last year. He also has been called by Langer for assisting during the ODI tour of England and for mentoring Aaron Finch. But now, he may join with a big assignment, but only for the winter campaign.  

There is no official announcement is stated yet. Cricket Australia (CA) chief Kevin Roberts just hints about the upcoming ‘involvement of ex-players’ in the coaching staff.   

“I think there are opportunities to utilize some of those ex-players in shorter bursts… I think it’s really important that we do involve those ex-players in the game more and embrace their perspective to a greater degree… and whether it’s involving them in a mentoring capacity or in a formal coaching capacity, we want to be covering all those bases and utilizing all the expertise they’ve got.”

Former bowling coach Troy Cooley has stepped in for Saker, who quit effective immediately on Thursday after discussions with Langer
