Our spinners need to grow better game sense: Shakib

Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan thinks that better game sense will help their spinners to be world-beaters.

Bangladesh defeated West Indies by 64 runs in their opening Test that also was a testament of their spinner’s ability as it was the second time in their Test history that the spinners picked all 20 wickets for the hosts.

“We have some quality spinners. When it’s difficult to extract help from the wicket, our bowling might not seem to be as effective. But we do very well once we get some help from the wicket,” Shakib told reporters after the match.

Shakib he is now looking forward to see how the spinners grow their game sense as that is the only lacking they have as a spin force.

“I think we should develop our game sense,” said Shakib. A bowler might not get any wicket while another bowler is taking wickets at the other end, so to choke the flow of runs from his end to help his partner in such cases is the kind of mentality we need to develop.

“Our spinners will do much better once they learn to use this game sense and play according to the situations.”

“All of us spinners are very attacking bowlers. Sometimes it becomes difficult for us to bowl in a defensive manner. So, we always go for the attack. We have to learn to restrict runs from one end to give the attacking opportunity to the bowler other end,” he added.

Shakib praised Nayeem Hasan, who picked five-for in his debut Test, as the skipper believes he is the future prospect. According to the all-rounder, the spinners’ ability to bat also gives them an edge over other teams.

“The good thing is that having four proper spinners is not reducing the number of batsmen. All of us can come and take wicket at any time,” said Shakib.

“Nayeem bowled brilliantly as a debutant. The wicket was not so helpful yesterday, but he bowled very well. I think he has a great future ahead. But he might need to learn some things very quickly and he will learn it as he continues to play. What I figured out is that he is very brave,” he said.

Taijul picked six wickets in their second innings tom trigger the collapse of West Indies and it seemed his purple patch with the ball is lingering further, who completed the two-match Test series against Zimbabwe with 18 wickets.

Shakib admired the spinner’s work ethics and said that Taijul was Bangladesh’s best bowler in the first innings although he got one wicket.

He said: “The best thing about him [Taijul] is that he is works very hard on his bowling. He got one wicket in the first innings. We appreciated him a lot in the dressing room. We told him that he was our best bowler in the first innings despite getting only one wicket.

“Sometimes it happens that a bowler is bowling well but isn’t getting the wicket. We know it and we appreciate these little things in the dressing room. I know that the team management and the players will understand it.

“He bowled brilliantly. I would like him to bowl similarly in the next Test. I hope he gets five wickets in both innings.”
