West Indies rue for losing momentum

West Indies left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican admitted that they lost the plot after Bangladesh’s lower-order put up a surprise resistance when the visitors were preparing to bat in their first innings.

Fast bowler Shannon Gabriel inspired West Indies to claw back into the match, triggering a middle order collapse that dropped Bangladesh from 222-3 to 235-7. But Mehidy Hasan Miraj, Taijul Islam and debutant Nayeem Hasan dug in to take Bangladesh past 300 and ended the day on 315-8, much to the despair of the Caribbean side.

“Obviously Bangladesh are in the commanding seat from the morning until the tea break. I think Shannon bowled very well to get those four quick wickets. He brought us back in the game. But unfortunately they finished well as a team and put the momentum back in Bangladesh’s hands,” Warrican said.

“I think Shannon’s pace really works for him. He is very tall, so pace with height is very crucial. He bowls good areas as well. He is just not someone who bowls quick, but he also very disciplined. It is very important as a fast bowler.”

West Indies also didn’t help their cause by putting down several catches. They missed chances offered by Imrul Kayes twice on 3 and 16 to no-ball by Gabriel before he got dismissed on 44 and even couldn’t latch on to a chance given by Mominul Haque on 67. Those drops proved costly.

“I won’t say we were unlucky. I think we create our own luck. As a team you don’t want to drop catches or get wickets off no-balls. I don’t think it is luck. It comes down to discipline and doing the right things,” said Warrican.

But Warrican is hopeful that they would claw their way back on second day’s morning session to take the control of the game.

“Obviously we want to bowl out Bangladesh as quickly as possible. We don’t want them to bat long into tomorrow. If we can, we can get a good lead,” he said.

“It is very good for batting but assists the spinners. I think the spinners can get something out of it if they bowl in the right areas. Also, the ball is coming on well for the batsmen but the bounce is inconsistent. You have to watch it closely.”
