Wicket prevents from developing world-class slip cordon- Cook

Bangladesh fielding consultant Ryan Cook said on Monday that Bangladesh don’t produce world class slip fielders due to their wickets.
Bangladesh surface traditionally remained loyal to spinners contrary to South Africa or Australia where there is lot of bounce in the wicket to help the fast bowlers that also prompt them to have safe hands in the slip cordon.
Bangladesh dropped couple of catches in the slip cordon during their last Test against Zimbabwe that could have made them pay if the opponent really made them count for it.

‘’Some of it is from the history. In South Africa, from a young age, you might have four slips and a gully. Here with the pitches you play on here, you might not have that, you might have two slips,’’ Cook told reporters at Chittagong on Monday.
‘’So a lot of exposure to slip fielding whereas here there is lots of exposure to short legs and silly points while in South Africa, our guys struggle with that,’’ he said. ‘
’Obviously, through producing different wickets you’ll probably get more guys fielding in the slips. But good slip fielders come in a pair, or sometimes three and four. It’s important to be able to get a rapport and trust with your slip next to you, so slip 1, slip 2, slip 3, so it’s important that we have continuity in that,’’ he added.
Cook said that now they are trying to develop fielders through implementing rotation policy.
‘’We’ve tried to take the approach of rotation policy trying to get as many players to up skill as we can. So if we are short, or a guy’s injured you can always bring another fielder into that position who is quite good at that position,’’ said Cook.
‘’Obviously, when you look at the really successful slip cordons and you’d have Mathew Hayden, Shane Warne. Mark Waugh and they were there for years and years and years, so they get a lot of trust with each other.
Hopefully we can build that over time,’’ he said ‘’Our philosophy is try and get as many guys to improve their slip catching or at short leg, so if Shanto is in there, Minnie is in there or Liton is in there they can do a good job for the team,’’ he added.
