Bangladesh skipper Mahmudullah Riyad is pleased to score some runs that he believes was necessary to get out of the lean patch in red-ball cricket.

Mahmudullah’s lack of form in the longer format prompted the team management to drop him from Bangladesh’s 100th Test match in Sri Lanka last year despite being a senior member of the squad. Although he returned with some runs under his belt, it never really solved his problems.

The 32-year-old scored 122 runs in innings to complicate things further before scoring a career-saving hundred against Zimbabwe in the second Test match to help the host level the two-match series.

“Yes, you can say it was a little relief because I did not perform well in the last five Tests, there was no fifty. I was struggling in this format. I wanted to evaluate my place, because the captain always needs to perform from the front. I had that accountability within myself.

“Alhamdulillah, I have been able to contribute to the team. But I still have a lot to improve. I want to be more consistent in this format,” said Mahmudullah.

Mahmudullah is happy that the team could held their nerves under pressure. However, he thinks that they need to work hard to diminish their shortcomings in the longer formats.

“Even if you score a hundred or a double-ton, you will feel the need to work on few things – such is the game of cricket,” he said.
