Widely regarded as one of the finest batsmen Zimbabwe have ever produced, Brendan Taylor’s long search for an overseas ton finally came to an end when he struck a superb 110 against a spirited Bangladesh spin-attack on the third day of the second Test on Tuesday at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium.
But it came at a time when his team are on the knife-edge of a defeat that would effectively ruin the hopes of winning their first Test series since 2011. This also could be their first away Test series win since 2001, but with 218 runs deficit with two days still to be played, Taylor dared not to hope for the best. Still he savoured the knock that came against a world class spin attack by his own admission.

“It is a good feeling. The last few years, the three-Test match series in 2014 was a tough series, and it always is tough playing here against a world class spin attack. So I’m thrilled with that, but we’re still a long way behind in the game. When Bangladesh have 500, it’s very hard to lose from that position. So we’ve got a lot to play for still,” Taylor said.
Taylor’s fifth Test century is also his second century against Bangladesh. And apart from centuries, he had some fine match winning knock against Bangladesh also.
“Obviously I’ve played more Test matches against Bangladesh, but I’ve always felt they’re one of the harder teams to play because of their spinners. Over the years Razzak, Shakib, even Mohammed Rafique, they’ve always been a tough challenge, whether we play in Harare or Bulawayo, it’s always tough. So today is probably one of my better ones. Hopefully we can take something out of the game and bat as long as we can when it’s going to be very difficult,” he said.
