BCCI to question Ravi Shastri and Virat Kohli

Indian team’s shambolic performances in the ongoing Test series have attracted criticism from all quarters. Accordingly, a latest report states that the BCCI will question the captain-coach duo considering the team’s performances in the third Test match.

The third Test of the series will commence on Saturday at Nottingham. Currently, the team is 2-0 down in the series, and the board has not taken lightly to it.

A senior BCCI office speaking to PTI said, “The Indian team can't complain that they were not given enough time to prepare. When we lost the South Africa series, the players spoke about tight scheduling and lack of practice games. It was after speaking to them that we decided that white ball matches will be held before the Tests.”

Kohli and Shastri have maintained a superior stance in the board, and the association believes that they have supported the duo and the demands of the team management well enough. Now, accordingly, they are within their rights to question them regarding the team’s poor performances in the opening two matches, particularly the second one.

The official reportedly said, “We arranged white ball matches first. It was on the senior team's insistence that we send the India A team during the same time starting the concept of 'Shadow Tour'. Two senior India players (Murali Vijay and Ajinkya Rahane) were accommodated for A team games. Whatever they wanted, they were provided. Now if results don't come, the Board is well within its rights to ask questions.”

If India lose this series, there could be severe consequences as such. The support staff’s performance is being evaluated and fielding coach R Sridhar’s role has come under scrutiny. Since Sridhar took over the reins, the Indian slip cordon has dropped 50 catches, as their technique has also been under scanner.

About the support staff, the official said, “Don't forget under Shastri and current support staff, we have lost major Test series in Australia (0-2 in 2014-15), South Africa (1-2 in 2017-18). Now we are in dire straits in England.”

“If you remember, BCCI removed Duncan Fletcher's assistants Joe Dawes (bowling coach) and Trevor Penny (fielding coach) after India lost the Test series 1-3 in England. Shastri became the Director along with Sanjay Bangar, R Sridhar and Bharat Arun joining the support staff before the ODI series,” the board member added.

There are certain doubts about captain Kohli’s fitness too, as his back injury troubled him in the course of the second Test match. In case of his absence, there are chances that Ravichandran Ashwin could lead the side as vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane’s form has been worrisome in both the matches.

For sure, there could be some very interesting repercussions if India proceed to lose this Test series.
