Kiwi opener announces retirement

New Zealand opener Rob Nicol has brought the curtain down on his cricketing career on Saturday (June 9). He debuted against Sri Lanka in a T20I in 2010 and then became the only second Kiwi batsman to have clubbed a century on his ODI debut, after Martin Guptill.
In an international career spanning only three years, the 35-year-old played 45 matches across all formats where he amassed 941 runs and snared 15 wickets as well. He could bowl both medium pace and off-spin.

The all-rounder played his last official game for Otago in April this year. He has also represented Auckland and Canterburry at domestic level. Nicol also featured in county cricket where he played for Gloucestershire.
In his 17-year-long career in domestic cricket, Nicol scalped a total of 208 wickets across all formats. The right-handed batsman scored 6319 runs including 10 hundreds in 130 first-class matches. He also smashed nine centuries in 151 List A games and made a total of 4717 runs.
The news of his retirement comes just a day after Mike Hesson announced his resignation as the Black Caps coach.
