While the Test captaincy of the Australian cricket team has been bestowed upon the shoulders of Tim Paine, uncertainty still looms over the next man to take charge of the ODI team.

During the final Test against the Proteas, Tim Paine suffered an injury while standing up to the stumps as Chadd Sayers was bowling. Scans later confirmed that the wicketkeeper had suffered from a hairline fracture on his right thumb but evaded an operation that was surely going to remove him from contention of the ODI series against England.

The wicketkeeper has already gone through seven surgeries on his index fingers over the last seven years and almost retired last year before resurging his career after being called up for the Ashes.

Paine is expected to return to action in three weeks’ time as the squad for the England tour could be announced early next month.

Australia’s tour will begin with a practice match against Sussex on June 1 and then go on to play five ODIs in a series that begins on the 13^th of June. Fast bowler Mitchell Starc is still a doubt for the series as his condition will be reviewed by the medical staff in a few weeks.

Even though Tim Paine is expected to be fit before the tour, there is a chance that he might not be given the captaincy for the ODI team as the selectors might not want to overburden him with the responsibility of captaining in all three formats.

As a result, CA might opt to go with different captains for different formats with names like Aaron Finch, Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh in the mix to be the captain of Australia in white-ball cricket.

The same could also happen in the coach’s role as CA are yet to announce Darren Lehmann’s successor. While Justin Langer is touted to take over the Test side, Ricky Ponting and Jason Gillespie are in the mix to be the coach in the limited overs’ format.
