Man faked death to save himself after Nidahas trophy final

Betting is one of the worst things to shroud the game with its ruthless blood-sucking nature. Many people lose their land and life over betting on cricket matches. In one such incident in Bangladesh, one man decided to fake his death in order to evade paying the money that he lost due to betting in the final of the Nidahas trophy.

The man in the spotlight is Adel Shikder. After making a 1.5 lac taka bet over Bangladesh’s win in the final of the Nidahas trophy, he lost it after Dinesh Karthik hit the last ball of Soumya Sarkar’s over for a six. After that, a video of him getting his throat slit became viral on the social media, with it getting thousands of shares in a few days’ time.

This got the attention of the police to launch an investigation, where they found that the man had faked his death in order to avoid paying the money that he owed.

"He hired a film make-up artist who is an occasional videographer to film his 'murder' after he lost a bet of 150,000 taka ($US1,800) on the Nidahas trophy final between Bangladesh and India," senior Dhaka police official Kamruzzaman Sardar told AFP.

"He had won 40,000 taka from the same person during the Bangladesh-Sri Lanka semi-final, which Bangladesh won. He spent the money and then he made a bigger bet in the final," Sardar added.

Apparently, Shikdar called his brother and used a different voice to inform him that his 'body' was in Chittagong. The police, however, found the make-up artist who put the prosthetics on him and then unraveled the entire case.

"I did it so that he did not seek any money from me. I did not realise it would cause all this," Shikder said when paraded before television cameras.

In Bangladesh, betting is an illegal activity, but with the rise of the Indian Premier League, betting has taken a huge rise in the underground with the police trying vehemently to crack down such activities.
