Malinga promises to improve Bangladeshi pacer

Sri Lankan star Lasith Malinga is regarded as one of the best pacers to grace the game of cricket. His round-arm action was somewhat of a sensation among the fans and pundits alike. The Sri Lankan was not only a devastating bowler for his country, however, as he is also a legend for the Mumbai Indians.

This season, he is the bowling coach of the Mumbai Indians—the same team for which Mustafizur Rahman will play this season. Since he is going to coach the young Bangladeshi left-arm pacer, he has promised to make him a better bowler under his tutelage.

“Mustafiz is now in my team [Mumbai Indians],” Malinga was quoted saying on bdnews24.

“I can really help him, I can improve him, 100%!”

While he is still an active cricketer in the Sri Lankan domestic circuit—taking four wickets for 24 runs in 8 overs for his side Nondescripts against Colombo Cricket Club in his last game—he has been snubbed by Chandika Hathurusingha in each of his squads since taking over the Sri Lankan national team.

In last season’s Indian Premier League, the Lankan pacer took 11 wickets in 12 games and couldn’t find a team this season, which is why he will find himself in a new role of bowling coach for the reigning champions.

And he is highly excited about his new role.

“I have been playing in the international arena for 14-15 years. I have the experience and know how to act according to the situation, which skill to use in a particular situation. [Almost] Everyone [in the Mumbai team] are international cricketers, so they don’t need to be explained much.

“There are still some moments, however, when they fail to do things properly. At that time, I can explain them on how to conquer those situations.”

When asked about Mustafizur Rahman, Malinga gave his own analysis on where the youngster is having problems despite having a great start to his international career. He also ascertained that he can help him become a better bowler.

“Mustafiz is also there [in the Mumbai Indians team]. I really want to help him. When he came [into the international scene], he was really extraordinary. He is still doing well, but people expect more from him.

“I think the weight of expectations has created pressure on him. I think he is trying too hard. I don’t think he is being able to bowl according to his plans.

“He has 3-4 types of variations, but he has to learn more about when to use them. I think he is being too aggressive and is trying too hard. He has to be a little relaxed.

“Definitely [I can improve Mustafizur]. I am certain [about it]. 100%.”
