Australia added 14 runs and reached a total of 227 runs before Pat Cummins became the last batsman to get dismissed for the team in their 2nd innings on day-4. With the lead of 189 runs in the 1st innings, the Aussies set an unattainable target of 417 runs for the hosts.

The 340 runs overcome by South Africa against the Baggy Greens is the highest successful chase at Kingsmead until now. So the Proteas needed to have something special up their sleeves to face the daunting task.

However, the South African batting line-up could not manage to do what was required and only three of them were able to go past a double-digit score. South Africa stumbled miserably at the beginning and became 49 for 4 with Elgar, Amla, de Villiers, du Plessis being sent back to the hut.

Opener Aiden Markram stood firm for the rainbow nation and stitched two crucial partnerships for his side. Theunis de Bruyn made 36 runs and shared an 87-run stand with Markram before getting dismissed by Hazlewood who had earlier trapped Amla lbw.

Quinton de Kock and Markram then built another 147-run stand to restore their innings. Mitchell Marsh finally let Australia breathe a sigh of relief by breaking the partnership that was appearing to be dangerous for them.

Markram clubbed a magnificent 143 runs before returning to the pavilion. Following his exit, Starc quickly scalped the next 3 wickets in a single over to complete his four-fer. De Kock, however, saved the hosting nation with his unbeaten knock of 81 runs as the umpire called the stumps.

The Proteas are now at 293 for 9 and Quinton de Kock will resume the 5th day’s play alongside Morne Morkel who is yet to score a run after facing 27 deliveries and will try to thwart the Australian bowling attack as long as he can while trying to collect the rest of the 124 runs required to seal the game.

Score:
Australia - 351/10 & 227/10
South Africa - 162/10 & 293/9
