Denly's performance sparks Sydney Sixers win


Sydney Sixers are on fire after starting the season with a dismal run. They have picked up their fourth consecutive victory in this edition after losing six back to back matches.
The side led by Johan Botha defeated Melbourne Stars by 5 wickets on Tuesday. Winning the toss Sydney decided to bowl first and conceded a mammoth total of 189 runs while scalping 5 wickets.
After both the Melbourne openers got out early, Glenn Maxwell stitched a 119-run partnership with Rob Quiney. Nathan Lyon bagged Rob Quiney’s wicket while the batsman was on 36 runs.
Maxwell was finally dismissed by Carlos Brathwaite who got the wicket of Peter Handscomb as well. Before Maxwell’s departure, another batsman – Seb Gotch was out by Joe Denly scoring 2 runs. Maxwell played a fantastic knock of 84 runs facing 47 deliveries.
James Faulkner and Evan Gulbis remained unbeaten on 21 and 14 runs, respectively. Stars’ Ben Dwarshuis gave his team the breakthrough by bowling Ben Dunk out.
Sydney Sixers displayed a heroic chase with their opener Joe Denly remaining not out until his team clinched the victory. Despite losing Daniel Hughes’ wicket early, he built a partnership of 108 runs with Nic Maddinson.

Maddinson was trapped lbw by Hastings who later bagged the wicket of Carlos Brathwaite as well, but Denly stood firm and witnessed two more wickets fall at the other end as both Moises Henriques and Johan Botha got out by Gulbis scoring 21 and 14 runs, respectively.
However, it was Denly’s majestic knock of 72 runs alongside Maddinson’s quick-fire innings of 61 off 26 that powered Sydney while chasing the daunting total.
Sydney Sixers posted 190 runs with 15 balls remaining and Joe Denly was awarded the Player of the match for his all-round performance.
Melbourne Stars will face Hobart Hurricanes in their last match on 27th January. On the other hand, this was the last match for Sydney Sixers in this season.
