England have another day in their favor as they ended the day with a 164 runs' lead. They added 299 more runs today losing 6 wickets. England's score is now 491/9.

Alastair Cook has had a substandard run and averaged 13 up to this point in the series. But in the Boxing Day Test, he finally broke his worst run of 10 innings without a half-century. With his 244 runs' unbeaten innings, he overcame his 243 at Edgbaston just before those 10 innings.

Cook went way past his long-waited fifty with a top notch batting performance and scored a double-ton against the mighty Aussies. His knock also made him the highest scoring English batsman in an innings at the MCG.

Starting the day at 192 for 2, Joe Root picked up his half-century and got out by Pat Cummins at 61. He also got the wicket of Chris Woakes who made 26 runs before leaving the ground.

Dawid Malan and Jonny Bairstow could not play for long as Malan was trapped lbw by Hazlewood and returned to the pavilion making 14 runs. Bairstow was dismissed by Lyon following his 22-run-innings.

Moeen Ali scored 20 runs before his departure. The all-rounder's wicket was bagged by Lyon. Tom Curran was caught behind at 4 runs while facing a delivery from Hazlewood.

Another comeback hero―Stuart Broad―scored a magnificent half-century and accompanied Cook in a sensible way. Before getting out by Cummins, he played the highest innings by an English batsman at no. 10 in Australia. He made 56 runs while building a 100 run partnership with Cook.

Alstair Cook became the 6th highest Test run scorer leaving Brian Lara, Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Mahela Jayawardene behind. He also became the 5th player with 2 double-tons in Ashes. The former English captain stands 2nd alongside Graeme Smith with 5 double-centuries when it comes to the most number of 200s by openers. Virender Sehwag and Marvan Atapattu scored 6 double-tons each as openers.

The lifeless MCG pitch allowed re-energised England to mount a comeback. It will be exciting to see how the Baggy Greens manage this situation that seems to be a case of complacency for them right now.
