England fail to exploit two centuries

Australia are trailing by 200 runs at the end of day-2 in
the third Test of Ashes. Their skipper—Steve Smith—is unbeaten at 92 runs and
will look forward to pick up his hundred while making a productive partnership
with Shaun Marsh, who is batting at 7.
Finishing the first day with 305 runs on the scoreboard
after losing four wickets, England were on the brink of putting up a massive
total. But the lower-middle order and the tailenders’ failure to keep up with
the expectations saw them stop at 403.
Earlier in the first session, Dawid Malan was dismissed at
140 runs by Nathan Lyon. The spinner’s only wicket interrupted Malan on the way
of breaking Chris Broad’s record. Broad’s innings of 162 runs still remains the
highest score by an English maiden centurion at WACA.
Jonny Bairstow, who was batting on 75 runs yesterday, picked
up his century and celebrated in style by taking off his helmet and headbutting
it. He was picked up by Starc at 119.

After Malan’s departure, the rest of England’s five wickets
tumbled like the tiles of dominoes as no other batsman could play a decent
innings. Moeen Ali returned to the pavilion for a duck as Pat Cummins bagged
his second wicket with a bouncer.
Chris Woakes and Craig Overton scored 8 and 2 respectively before
getting out by Hazlewood. Starc picked up his 4th wicket of the
innings after dismissing Stuart Broad at 12 runs.
Australia, losing two wickets at 55 runs, needed their batsmen
to make a partnership. After both of the openers, Warner and Bancroft, were dismissed by Craig
Overton scoring 20 odd runs, Steve Smith along with Usman Khwaja gave the
Aussies exactly what they were looking for. Together, they built a partnership
of 124 runs before Usman got out at 50 runs by Woakes.
Australia are currently at 203 runs for 3 wickets. On the 3rd
day, the Kangaroos will be trying to take the lead and take one step further
towards sealing the series and reclaiming the Urn.
