Sledging “unpleasant and personal” – England legend

Former England international, Bob Willis, is of the opinion that sledging is taking an ugly turn in this Ashes series. The former England captain was particular displeased with the rumours of personal remarks against wicketkeeper, Jonny Bairstow.

Indeed, when Joe Root was batting with optimum concentration and will, he seemed unbeatable and that is when both Steven Smith and Tim Payne were seen talking to him behind the stump. And Willis stated that the Australian players need to behave on the pitch.

"I understand that the sledging on the field is getting particularly unpleasant and particularly personal, directed at one or two individuals in the England side," he said.

"Without going into any details, one of those individuals is Bairstow - I don't like the rumours I'm hearing about it and the Australians really do need to learn to behave themselves on the field.

While he might have a strong view against the Kangaroos for their sledging, he also believes that he doesn’t mind the “odd word” – unless it gets too personal.

"I don't mind the odd word, fielders round the bat saying 'you can't play' or anything like that, but when things get personal, I can't be doing with that.

Willis then called for the umpires to report such incidents to the match referee in order to put a limit to such things.

"I think that if the umpires hear anything of that nature then they should be reporting it to the match referee."

Sledging is a part and parcel of the game, but taking things too far in the name of banter is never welcome. This is not the first time that Australian players have been accused of such issues, with the team captained by Ricky Ponting always coming under scrutiny in this regard, and it is time they keep it healthy.
