Faf du Plessis wants to do away with toss

South Africa captain Faf du Plessis spoke about South Africa’s loss to Sri Lanka in the first Test between the two nations. The South African batsmen couldn’t face the fury of the Sri Lankan spinners and got out for an embarrassing 73 in the fourth innings to give Sri Lanka a 278 runs win.

Du Plessis, however, believes that it was a good Test wicket and it wasn’t, at any point, unplayable.

“I thought it was actually a decent Test wicket. It’s obviously a lot more challenging to face spin. But there weren’t any demons in the wicket at any stage while we were playing.”

Speaking of home advantage, Faf du Plessis thinks that the hosts will always win most of the games but a “balance” is required as Test matches are finishing way before the 5-day mark, which is why he is in favour to do away with the toss.

“I think even in South Africa you’ll still prepare the conditions the way you prepare them now, but you just make sure that you bring some balance. In home conditions, teams will still win the majority of the games, but you do it to even it out a little. I think over the last two or three years away-records have definitely gone down, and games are finishing a lot sooner than they used to,” Du Plessis said.

"I’m a big fan of taking away the toss. When I started playing Test cricket, 400s and 500s were happening quite regularly. So I’m not just speaking about subcontinent conditions. In South Africa games hardly reach the end of day four anymore. I think that’s one of the ways you can make sure that balance is a little better.”

South Africa have already blown away their chance to back-to-back series against Sri Lanka as the hosts already leas 1-0 in a two-match series. The next Test between these two sides will take place on the 20th of July.
