9 Jan 25Malan, who once topped the ICC T20I batting rankings, acknowledged that his experiences in Bangladesh were pivotal in his development as a cricketer.
Speaking to the media during a practice session in Chattogram, the 37-year-old said, “Bangladesh holds a special place in my cricketing career. I played in the Dhaka Premier League 10-11 years ago. Like the Pakistan Super League, these leagues helped me improve as a batsman and adapt to different conditions.”
Malan played in the DPL for Prime Doleshwar in the 2013-14 and 2014-15 seasons before making his BPL debut in 2016-17 with Barishal Bulls.
Over the years, he has represented various franchises, including Khulna Titans and Cumilla Warriors. However, his growing commitments with the England team meant he could not participate in the BPL after 2019.
Reflecting on his journey, Malan credited the BPL and DPL for giving him the platform to grow.
“I am always grateful to the BPL, Dhaka Premier League, and Bangladesh cricket for providing me opportunities. Without their support, I might not have become the player I am today,” he said.
Malan’s lone appearance this season came in Barishal’s sixth match, where he scored an unbeaten 49 off 41 balls against Dhaka Capitals, forming a century partnership with Tamim Iqbal.
Despite his solid performance, Malan admitted to feeling a bit frustrated about sitting out multiple games, especially with opportunities to play in other leagues.
“When you sign up for a league and have to sit out while other leagues are ongoing, it’s naturally frustrating. But I understand that Fortune Barishal has a strong team, and opportunities have been limited,” he explained.
