Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) are mulling over split captaincy in different formats after their semifinal exit in the World Cup 2019.

They are thinking about giving ODI and T20 captaincy to Indian opener Rohit Sharma and current Indian skipper Virat Kohli will be captain only in the Test format as per the report suggests.

According to report in new agency IANS, the split captaincy one of the ideas being considered as part of getting India ready for their next big campaigns like the T20 World Cup in 2020 and 2023 World Cup in India.  Report also suggests that BCCI are also worried about rift between the Kohli and Sharma as they are two integral part of the Indian squad. Sources suggest that some of the players were unhappy about the decision of Kohli and head coach Ravi Sastri. One of the decision was selecting Vijay Shankar over Ambati Rayudu.

The board official said that BCCI are pondering over the idea of split captaincy over three formats and they think Rohit would be right for the job as ODI and T20 captain.

“This would be the right time for Rohit to take over the mantle of the captaincy in the 50-over format. There has been immense support to the present captain and the management and it is time to plan ahead for the next World Cup and for that the existing ideas and plans need a fresh look. We all know some areas need a re-look. Rohit would be the right man for the job,” the official said.

Split Captaincy isn’t new in Indian cricket. In the recent past, Anil Kumble captained India in Tests and MS Dhoni in white-ball cricket. Again Dhoni in red-ball cricket and Kohli lead India in white-ball cricket.
