As Bangladesh tasted a sensational collapse after the no-ball incident, finger pointed towards Brathwaite to halt the game deliberately and thereby changed the momentum.
Bangladesh made a whirlwind start in pursuit of 190 and were well on course to gun it down but West Indies hit back hard after that incident. The no-ball though stood, Bangladesh seemed to have distracted from their concentration
“I can’t control that,” Brathwaite said. “I knew that the call that wasn’t given was about to change the game [smiles]. It wasn’t a deliberate ploy to halt the momentum.”
Brathwaite said he needed to understand what rules say about the decision because it was important to decide the course of the match.
“Looking back, it may have. I can’t say for sure. But at that point, it was about getting the right decision. Firstly, understanding why the decision was made, understanding what the law was, if common sense can prevail against the law, which they said no to, and then finishing the game of cricket. It would have been easy for our guys to put their head down, we lost and complain about the decision. We didn’t do that. Those 10 guys got together in the huddle and decided to put our bodies on the line and fight for every single ball.”
But he insisted that the rules may be put into question after this no-ball incident.
“I think the pace of play is important. As teams we often take longer to finish the overs. I haven’t given it a serious thought but off the top of my mind, if we check every single ball, it may hamper the pace of play. There must be more strategic ways to do these things. I don’t know what all the rules are pertaining to reviews so I don’t want to tell them how to do their job. But it can be looked at. The laws may be put into question after this incident.
