Pakistan batsman Shoaib Malik has announced that the 2020 World T20 could be his last tournament in the competition. Malik had already announced earlier that the 2019 World Cup will be his last tournament in the format.

He once again reiterated that and added that his main goal is to retire from T20 after the World T20 but also stated that it all depends on his fitness and discussions with the Pakistan Cricket Board.

“I have said this before on many occasions that 2019 50 Over World Cup will be my last World Cup,” said Malik.

“My goal is also to play the 2020 World T20 and end my T20 career after that but that depends on my fitness and will be based on discussions with the PCB as I believe honesty is important as a cricketer. If you feel that another player can come in place of you and play better than he should be given a chance.”

Malik, who has played in over 400 international matches, further emphasized on the importance of fitness in making his decision about hanging up his boots.

“My goal is to play these two World Cups but it will depend on my fitness and if I feel that the time has come to take retirement, I will definitely take that option,” he added.

Shoaib Malik is one of the last remaining players of the previous generation of cricketers in Pakistan. With the rise of new talents in the country, it is more than likely that a retirement is on the horizon.
