India captain Virat Kohli has admitted that India were outplayed by hosts England on all three fronts. For the first time under his captaincy, India lost a Test match by an innings.
After winning the toss and putting India to bat first, the hosts dismantled the visitors for a mere 107 runs. In response, a Chris Woakes-inspired England made 396 runs and declared, only for India to bundle out for 130 in their second innings and lost the game by an innings and 159 runs.
Kohli, meanwhile, admits that the team didn’t play well and that the only thing gthey are thinking about now is to make the series 2-1.
“There’s no hiding from the fact that mistakes have been made,” he said. “We didn’t play good cricket in this game. We bowled well in the beginning but didn’t hit our areas consistently.

“We didn’t get enough chances in the field to miss any, but with bat and ball we could have done much better than we did. We’re certainly not thinking of anything else but making it 2-1 in the series and building on that strongly.”
Kohli then went on to praise England while also admitting that the hosts outplayed Team India.
“This is the first time in the last five Tests that we’ve been really outplayed. We’ve competed in every game before.
“A side like England, when they play like that, they can outplay any opposition, especially when they play at home and the ball is doing a bit. We’ll have to accept that, put it aside and improve in the next game.”
The Indian skipper then called out for his team-mates to shoulder some responsibility and display determination to come out on top under adverse circumstances.
"We need guys putting their hands up and saying 'give me a tough situation, I'm going to pull the team out.' It is all in the head. It is nothing to do with the game," he said.
"You can play well in any condition if you are mentally ready for it. And that's something we need to work on over the next four or five days. We should want the next Test match to come early rather than thinking, 'oh, we have five days till the next Test match comes on.' These are small little things that make a massive difference."
