Following the approval of the new BCCI [Board of Control for Cricket in India] draft constitution by the Supreme Court of India, reports emerged that former India captain Sourav Ganguly could become the next BCCI president. The 46-year-old is currently serving his third presidential term at the Cricket Association of Bengal [CAB].

“He [Ganguly] is definitely eligible and ticks most of the boxes,” a BCCI member was quoted as saying by the Indian Express.

The newly approved constitution bars politicians and government servants from holding office within the BCCI. And most of the experienced administrators are ineligible to hold the board presidentship due to the cooling-off clause. Hence, Ganguly could be seen replacing the acting BCCI president CK Khanna, given that he resigns from his current post at CAB.

The former India batsman has already served for four cumulative years as an administrator and has only two more years left to be in an administrative role. However, BCCI are likely to have no problems with that, as they are looking for an image makeover.

In an interview with The Hindu earlier this year, Ganguly had backed the concept of having former players take up different positions in the administration.

“Players can be good administrators but it depends on how much time they put in. What you are ready to put in as an administrator is also important. I think non-players can also be very good and I think it should be a balance of both. They both have a place in the system, and that’s important,” he said.
