Ben Stokes’ trial for having knocked down two men late night in September last year has begun in the Bristol Crown Court. Stokes was involved in a brawl outside a pub in Bristol last year, along with two citizens named Ryan Ali and Ryan Hale. The English all-rounder is believed to have attacked the aforementioned two people with revenge and retaliation in his mind.

Accordingly, Ryan Ali suffered notable injuries, as his eye socket ended up fractured in this incident.

The whole situation commenced when Stokes along with fellow England teammate Alex Hales tried to reenter the Mbargo nightclub post 2 am. However, several members of the English team had partied in the club before that, and hence door attendant Andrew Cunningham refused to allow entry to Stokes and Hales late in the night.

The situation worsened when Stokes reportedly offered Cunningham 300 pounds to let them inside the pub. While the door attendant declined the offer, the 27-year-old allegedly mocked a gay couple named Kai Barry and William O’Connor.

Later, Stokes came across Ali, Hale, Barry and O’Connor on the street. After a brief exchange of words, Ali seemed to raise the bottle through which he was drinking towards Hales. The bottle unintentionally hit Barry, according to the video footage, but Stokes packed a blow of punches to Ali, Barry and O’Connor. The video indicates that Stokes was punching with such ferocity, that the state could only be deemed as unconsciousness.

The prosecution said, “If the incident had been restricted to that, it is highly unlikely we would be here today. We know Mr Ali had a bottle had a bottle and was using it," Corsellis continued. “Stokes may have been - may have been - acting in defence of himself or another in taking hold or striking of Mr Ali at this stage. You may use violence in public if you think it is necessary to defend yourself or others.”

“But there is a big difference in using violence to defend someone and then deciding to retaliate or taking out a secondary attack on someone who had the temerity to attack you. That is exactly what you see in this clip. This is retribution and retaliation; not self-defence.”

Ben Stokes will most probably miss the second Test match against India at Lords this week.
