Poor umpiring, wretched batting lead Dhaka’s downfall

It was a reality check for Dhaka Dynamites. Their unbeatable winning run was halted by Rajshahi Kings as they defeated the star studded Dynamites by 20 runs at the Sylhet International Stadium.

Dynamites, one of the pre-tournament favourites, arrived at Sylhet with four wins from as many matches before superb work from the Kings bowlers, especially the spinners threw them away off course quite early in the chase with three quick wickets and they never seemed to recover from the early blow.

Kings left-arm spinner Arafat Sunny's sensational spell - with figures of 3/8 - proved to be pivotal behind their success while he was ably supported by Mehidy Hasan and Mustafizur Rahman with their smart bowling.

The unified effort of the Kings bowlers denied the Dhaka batters to get themselves in and it was quite a surprising failure from the whole Dynamites unit considering the way they've dominated the competition so far.

‘’Actually, the way we were batting during the last four matches that did not take place this time,’’ Dynamites Nayeem Sheikh told reporters to sum up the reason behind their unexpected loss.

‘’That’s the reason we all got out,’’ he said adding he believes the departure of Kieron Polard as well as his own failure to bat till the end can be pointed out as the major reason for their failure.

‘’I think the wicket of Pollard and me was the turning point of the match,’’ said Nayeem

‘’Our plan was to play till the 19th over like the way it was moving at that point before we were separated and that brought the downfall. The wicket was quite easy but we just managed to throw away our wicket,’’ he added.

However, if batting was the major reason behind Dynamites failure, they can curse them for not getting the maximum help from technology that surely left an impact on the morale of the team at that point of time.

DRS, that was introduced after the opening day, looked never been used to its fullest potential and  it was largely due to the umpiring error when third umpire Masudur Rahman unjustifiably denied Narine the wicket of Doeschate.

Narine had appealed for leg-before, which Dhaka reviewed after the on-field umpire turned down it.  The ultra-edge showed that the ball had hit the glove of Doeschate before going to wicketkeeper Nurul Hasan. While Doeschate should have been out caught-behind in this case, third umpire was completely oblivious of signaling it.

‘’We were surprised [ by the decision],’’ said Nayeem though he was bit nervous when he was asked to explain the entire situation and looked to relieved when Dynamites manager Azam Iqbal took the microphone on his behalf.

‘’As far as I’ve seen, there was an appeal raised for caught-behind. Then it was seen that it was an edge. Player’s ,undoubtedly, appealed for a leg-before. It did not progress thereafter. It depends on the umpires,’’ said the former national opener regarding the umpiring fiasco.
