West Indies wash away the Tigers

This was meant to be. After all, Bangladesh were up against the mighty world champions, who might have been on a 5-match losing streak before this game but had an almost full-strength team up against Bangladesh.

After winning the toss, West Indies decided to bowl first on a lovely batting track. Carlos Brathwaite’s decision paid dividends as both Bangladeshi openers Tamim Iqbal and Soumya Sarkar went back to the pavilion for golden ducks, respectively.

With such an atrocious start for the Tigers, a low-score was on the cards but Liton Das and Shakib Al Hasan held the innings together for a while. However, both of them fell in the space of two deliveries in the sixth over, putting Bangladesh in a precarious position once again – something that has been the case with them all tour.

At the time, the score was 43-4 after 5.3 overs. Shakib made 19 from 10 while Liton smashed 24 from 21 balls.

In came Mushfiqur Rahim and Mahmudullah Riyad, who once again collected scatter and attempted to put it back together for the Tigers piece-by-piece.

And it seemed as though they were going to be successful in the endeavor but, as has been the case with Bangladesh, they lost another wicket in a crucial juncture of the game.

Rahim departed with the score at 90 after 9.3 with the run-rate still being on the good side. However, since five wickets were already down, a big score from there wasn’t really expected.

And that is exactly what happened as Bangladesh slowed down from there and could only manager 149 despite playing their quota of 20 overs. Mahmudullah Riyad ended up with 35 runs from 27 balls.

Credit must be given on how the West Indian bowlers went about their bowling. They might have given away runs in the first 10 overs but they ensured that the wickets kept tumbling.

Kesrick William took four wickets while Keemo Paul and Ashley Nurse took a couple of scalps each themselves. Andre Russell also finished with a wicket under his belt.

In response, in a rain-inflicted innings, West Indies had to chase 91 from 11 overs and they did without hardly breaking a sweat. While Mustafizur Rahman took two early wickets in the same over and also giving a maiden in the process, the strong middle order of West Indies cruised to the total with Andre Russell finishing with 35* runs from 21 balls.

Marlon Samuels also played a handy innings of 26 from 13 while Rovman Powell hit the winning shot to take his tally to 15 from 9.

Rubel Hossain was the only other wicket taker for the Tigers.

Scores:

Bangladesh – 143/9 (20 overs)

West Indies – 93/3 (9.1 overs)
