As Team India have started their journey at home with a 227-run loss under Virat Kohli, many have suggested bringing a change in the Test captaincy. However, former England captain Kevin Pietersen backed Virat Kohli as Test captain amidst the captaincy debacle whether the team should stick with him or not. Pieterson said that the team have lost in the presence of Ajinkya Rahane in the playing eleven as well.

Notably, under Kohli, India faced four successive defeats - lost two Tests in New Zealand last year before COVID-19 hit the world, then they lost against Australia in the first Test in Adelaide in December 2020 and then against England in their first Test in Chennai this week as well.

"I absolutely don't expect things to change, but it is impossible to avoid the continuing debate around the Indian Test match captaincy. Virat Kohli has now lost four consecutive Test matches as skipper, and has Ajinkya Rahane, who just led India to a famous series win in Australia, in his side," Pietersen has written in his blog for Betway recently.

On the other hand, Ajinkya Rahane successfully led the team to a stunning 2-1 win in Australia after their defeat in Adelaide and has a 100% winning record as a Test captain so far.

"On social media, every radio station, every television channel and every news channel, there are very deep discussions around what should happen. Captaining your country is very difficult and unfortunately this is the nature of the beast. It's one more distraction that Kohli doesn't need but he is, of course, capable of leading his side to a victory in the second Test to quieten things down a bit," he further added.

The second Test between India and England will be played at the same venue in Chennai from February 13 and the host will try to bounce back to reach the final of the World Test Championship (WTC) as well.
