Team India started its home series with a huge 227 runs loss to England in the first match of a four-Test series in Chennai on Tuesday (February 9). However, England's win came on the back of a stunning double-hundred from the Captain Joe Root who helped to put up 578 runs in the first innings. On the other hand, India captain Virat Kohli had a poor show with the bat in the first innings.
Although he scored a fifty in the second, he couldn't take the team home. However, former India pace bowler Ashish Nehra backed the skipper, citing that he could also score a double century if he gets the chance to bat first in Indian conditions as well.
"You are talking about one or two centuries, I would say when India wins the toss, he will score 250 also. This is the special thing about Virat Kohli. When Ashwin got out, he knew that they will lose the match but he did not play any airy-fairy shots," Nehra said on Star Sports. "He takes pride in scoring his own runs, that he should not get out. Anyone would have got out to the ball he was dismissed, it kept extremely low."
"He kept at it which you need to do on the fourth and fifth days on a subcontinent pitch. The desire makes this player different from others and it is not only here. When he couldn't score runs in England, very few people would have seen Virat Kohli lunging forward to play the defensive shots. To do that, you need fitness," he again shared.
With the win, England have taken a lead of 1-0 in the four-match Test series. Both the team will take on each other in the second Test from February 13 at the same venue in Chennai.
