The white-ball series was expected to provide an opportunity to revive cricketing ties between Bangladesh and India after a difficult period in bilateral relations.
BCB president Tamim Iqbal had repeatedly expressed optimism about hosting the series and even held a meeting with senior government officials last week to discuss efforts to make the tour happen.
However, recent political developments have cast further doubt over the series. On August 5, former Bangladesh prime minister Sheikh Hasina and several members of her party took part in a virtual press conference from Delhi, triggering renewed tensions between the two countries.
Bangladesh Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed also criticised India on August 8 over the issue, saying,
“India cannot seek friendly relations with Bangladesh while allowing statements from Delhi that question Bangladesh’s democracy and create instability in the country.”
The latest developments have reportedly increased concerns within the BCB about the feasibility of hosting the series.
The series had gained added importance following Bangladesh’s withdrawal from the ICC T20 World Cup earlier this year, reportedly citing security concerns. Although the political dimension was also discussed around the decision, the episode further strained cricketing relations between the two countries.
Following the political transition in Bangladesh and the formation of a new government after the February election, the BCB had hoped for an improvement in bilateral cricketing ties.
Hosting India was also viewed as a major commercial opportunity, with significant potential revenue from ticket sales, broadcasting rights, sponsorships and other commercial activities.
However, those prospects now appear increasingly uncertain.
A BCB official, speaking to Cricbuzz on condition of anonymity, admitted that the board's confidence had diminished.
“After everything that has happened recently, I am now doubtful about the series,” the official said.
He also revealed that the BCB had yet to receive any positive response from India regarding the series.
“I don't think we will get any response from the other side regarding the series. To be honest, it was supposed to happen by August 28. How many days do we have left?” he said.
