Tamim Iqbal has taken a major step to improve spectator comfort at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium, announcing plans to install a large canopy shade over the uncovered East Gallery.

After assuming charge as head of the Bangladesh Cricket Board’s ad-hoc committee, Tamim had prioritized reducing difficulties faced by fans attending matches.

Continuing that effort, the board has now decided to set up a canopy covering approximately 27,000 square feet in the East Gallery, where spectators are currently exposed to intense sun and rain.

Speaking at a press conference in Mirpur on Thursday, Tamim highlighted the issue faced by fans in the most affordable seating area.

“The area where the giant screen and scoreboard are located has no shade. Ticket prices there are the lowest, and it attracts the highest number of spectators. In this heat, they suffer a lot due to direct sunlight,” he said.

“We have all agreed to install a canopy setup of around 27,000 square feet, which will bring the entire section under shade. Similar work has been done recently at the National Stadium. We have already started the process and hope it will be visible soon,” he added.

Most other sections of the stadium, including Shaheed Jewel and Shaheed Mushtaq stands, the Northern and Southern galleries, the International Lounge, and the Grand Stand, already have roofing, offering better protection to spectators.

Before taking this decision, the Bangladesh Cricket Board had also installed large fans on a trial basis under the Club House stand to provide relief during extreme heat.

In addition, the board is exploring plans to introduce solar power at the stadium. Inspired by advice from State Minister for Youth and Sports Aminul Haque, the BCB is considering installing solar panels across the stadium’s rooftops to reduce electricity costs.

“We also agree with the idea of introducing a solar system. We currently spend a significant amount on electricity bills every month. We are still at a very early stage, but we aim to install solar systems across all stadium roofs,” Tamim said.

“It will be good for the environment and help save energy. We need to assess the investment versus return, and if everything aligns, it will be a matter of pride for us,” he added.

The initiatives reflect a broader effort by the board to enhance fan experience while also moving toward sustainable stadium operations.
