Opener Shadman Islam and pacer Mrittunjoy Chowdhury will be sent to Australia later this month for treatment of their respective injuries, a Bangladesh Cricket Board official confirmed on Wednesday.

Shadman missed out from Bangladesh’s first Test in Pakistan for a wrist injury and Bangladesh Under-19 pacer Mrittunjoy had to return home midway into the ICC Under-19 World Cup in South Africa due to a shoulder injury.

Both Shadman and Mrittunjoy will now fly to Australia to consult with an orthopaedic specialist, confirmed the national team’s chief physician Debashis Chowdhury.

Debashis feared that Shadman might need a surgery, but said the final call about his treatment will be taken after the Australian physician examines his injury.

If Shadman does go under the knife, it would subsequently make him unavailable for the second and final Test against Pakistan in April.

Although the board hasn’t revealed the physician’s name, it was learnt that the players took appointments from renowned Australian orthopaedic surgeon Greg Hoy, who had previously operated on several Bangladesh cricketers like Mashrafee bin Murtaza, Sakib al Hasan, Mustafizur Rahman and Tamim Iqbal.
