BCB assures Shakib has no reason to skip SA series unless injury concern

After the T20 World Cup, Shakib Al Hasan briefly returned to Bangladesh, but left in early July to play for the Los Angeles Knight Riders in Major League Cricket (MLC).  Following the US franchise tournament, the star all-rounder headed to Canada for the Global T20 League, representing the Bangla Tigers.

During that time Bangladesh faced a historic student protest in July-August, Shakib, a Member of Parliament under the Awami League government, remained silent in that protest, which raised many eyebrows. After the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Shakib was accused for a murder case, creating further uncertainty about his ability to return to Bangladesh.

After completing his stint in Canada, Shakib traveled directly to Pakistan, where he played two Tests for Bangladesh. While the rest of the team returned home after the tour, Shakib went to England to play county cricket for Surrey, where he took nine wickets in a single match. From there, he flew to India to participate in the Chennai Test against India.

After the India series, Bangladesh to play against South Africa Test series at home and if all goes well, Shakib is expected to return finally in Bangladesh despite the political situation.

Amidst the concerns, Shahriar Nafees, head of cricket operations at the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), sees no reason for Shakib to miss the series.

"Our honorable advisors, including the sports and legal advisors, have clearly stated that no one will be unfairly harassed in these cases. The interim government has also made its position clear. Unless there's an injury or selection issue, I see no reason why Shakib would miss the home series against South Africa."  Nafees said to media on Monday.

Shakib has been dealing with a finger injury since the Chennai Test, followed by a previous surgery, which has impacted his bowling. During the match, Shakib informed India’s Murali Kartik about his discomfort. Selectors, including Hannan Sarkar, confirmed that Shakib is currently under observation.

"When the South Africa series selection is announced, we’ll know which players are in or out. The interim government and its advisors have been very clear about their stance. Personally, I don’t see any reason for doubt." Nafees added.
