India's Virat Kohli, Shubman Gill, and Mohammed Shami, along with New Zealand's Daryl Mitchell, have been shortlisted for the ICC Men's ODI Cricketer of the Year 2023 award. Notably, no members of the World Cup-winning Australian side made the cut.
Shubman Gill, displaying exceptional form, amassed 1584 runs in 29 matches with an impressive average of 63.36. In a remarkable feat, he became the youngest ODI double-centurion in 2023, scoring an outstanding 208 against New Zealand in Hyderabad.
Additionally, he joined the ranks as the joint second-fastest to reach 1000 runs in the format.
India's batting maestro Virat Kohli earned his spot on the list by scoring 1377 runs in the previous year, with a notable contribution of 765 runs in the ODI World Cup, where he was named the player of the tournament. In 2023, Kohli also became the first batter ever to achieve fifty centuries in the ODI format.
Mohammed Shami, India's pace spearhead, rightfully secured his place on the list as the highest wicket-taker in the last year's World Cup, claiming an impressive 24 wickets at an astonishing average of 10.7.
New Zealand's Daryl Mitchell made it to the list for his remarkable performance, scoring 1204 runs in 22 matches, marking the third-highest tally recorded in a calendar year in the ODI format by a New Zealand player.
