Bangladesh’s star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has been banned from bowling in tournaments under the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) after failing a bowling action test, reported yesterday (Friday). The issue was raised by two match umpires during Shakib’s stint with Surrey in the County Championship.

Shakib underwent a bowling action test earlier this month at Loughborough University in England. Despite his efforts, including adjusting his pace during the test, he did not pass. As a result, Shakib is now prohibited from bowling in any domestic competitions organized by the ECB, including the County Championship and The Hundred.

However, on Saturday, a source close to Shakib revealed that the all-rounder had been carrying a finger injury sustained before the Pakistan away series in August after the T20 World Cup, which may have impacted his ability to bowl with his usual action. Shakib is expected to undergo another test, either in Chennai or England, to regain bowling clearance.

Following the Pakistan series, Shakib played a sole County Championship match for Surrey against Somerset to prepare for Bangladesh’s tour of India.

Despite failing with the bat, he had a remarkable match overall, taking 9 wickets for 193 runs from 62 overs, marking a strong preparation for the India tour. However, bad news awaited him right after the match. For the first time in his career, he was accused of having an illegal bowling action.

After purchasing the Awami League’s nomination, he became a Member of Parliament in the last national election. However, following the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government, Shakib has been unable to return to the country.

Shakib had expressed interest in playing the first Test of the South Africa series in Mirpur, the government could not provide him with security.

Shakib’s recent ban adds to a challenging phase in his career. While currently representing Galle Marvels in the Lanka T10 Super League, Shakib has faced hurdles both on and off the field.

The all-rounder remains hopeful of resolving the issues and returning to action for Bangladesh, with plans to retest his bowling action and clear his path for future participation.
